MI FAMILIA Y OTROS MINERALES I
MI FAMILIA Y OTROS MINERALES I
MI FAMILIA Y OTROS MINERALES is an ode to the summers of my childhood. To the long hours spent observing the plant, mineral and animal kingdoms, which left an indelible mark on my imagination.
In this series, each piece is different, unique and forms part of an open-ended collection in which every item has a completely distinctive appearance. Inspired by "My Family and Other Animals" by the British naturalist and writer Gerald Durrell, this family is like any other: theatrical, comical, singular, and each member is a world unto themselves.
This box is made from certified ebony sourced from responsibly managed forests in Cameroon. On its lid is a composition set in handmade sterling silver, featuring a natural aragonite and a bird’s feather.
Dimensions: 10 x 5.5 cm

MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT
MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT
Durrell, a British naturalist and writer, recounts the early days of his youth spent on the Greek island of Corfu as follows: “At first I was so amazed by this abundance of life right on our doorstep that I would be dazzled as I moved from one spot to another in the garden, focusing now on this little creature, then on that one, my attention constantly distracted by the flight of the brilliant butterflies flitting across the hedge. Gradually, as I grew accustomed to the bustle of insects amongst the flowers, I found I could concentrate better. I would while away the hours crouching or lying on my stomach, observing the private lives of the creatures around me, whilst Roger, sitting a short distance away, waited for me with an air of resignation. In this way I learnt many fascinating things.”
Regardless of the differences, but with the same spirit of curiosity we all shared, I remember long hours spent watching the endless, tireless procession of ants laden with cargo heading for the anthill; counting the seconds it took for a ball worm to open up again after camouflaging itself. Afternoons spent sitting cross-legged, cracking pine nuts with a stone: the subtle flavour of the Mediterranean pine nut mingling with the scent of resin on my fingertips. Jumping to chase lizards, watching the mesmerised dragonflies drawn to the lights at night, gently pushing down the water lilies in the pond, which would rise again, demanding to be horizontal, catching the slippery tadpoles by hand with their slimy feel, playing cypress-ball wars, tirelessly sniffing the prickly eucalyptus berries in my pockets.
All those plants, creatures and stones stored in my gaze now rest, metaphorically, upon the boxes. Fearless, without hierarchy, transformed into other, more sophisticated yet equally fascinating minerals, plants and animals. They combine, intertwine and unite, and in their form as little treasures, they allow us to linger once more in those lost paradises and be captivated anew by the wonders that nature bestows upon us.
