100 gramos de oro puro

“100 gramos de oro puro” is an edition of 30 digital prints with hand-finished details on 308g Hahnemühle paper. Each print carries a unique intervention: a handwritten text. They have been printed at the Tinta Invisible printmaking workshop in Barcelona.

The central image features a high-resolution scan of 100 grams of Fairmined pure gold, freshly delivered from the supplier to Teresa Estapé’s atelier. Its unique shape originates from a primary ingot that has been rolled into a 0.7 mm sheet, allowing it to be cut and distributed to goldsmiths for subsequent alloying and use.

Gold is extraterrestrial. It comes from the vast, cosmic explosion of a star (a supernova) whose scattered matter eventually fused to form the planet we inhabit. Among the materials dispersed across space was gold, now quietly embedded throughout the Earth.

Gold is an illusion. We have turned a metal into the foundation of a financial system, and that financial system into the foundation of a way of life: capitalism. Few things symbolize the accumulation of capital, our guiding deity, more powerfully than gold itself.

What form does gold take in our collective imagination? That of a jewel, a chest overflowing with coins, a stack of ingots stored in a dark, inaccessible place.

Absorbed in melting, rolling, soldering, filing and polishing, goldsmiths might overlook these reflections. Yet, when receiving gold in its pure state, we do feel, through the tips of our fingers; its honesty, its unrivalled density, its noble and gratifying malleability: the true temperament of the king of metals.
