Kairós
Kairós
Kairós is a piece of jewellery designed to accompany you in times of loss and change. As an amulet, it symbolises and connects with the feelings and emotions that arise during this process. It is deliberately simple in design, allowing each wearer to make it their own and give it their meaning. Its length places it in the chest where we instinctively resort to hold on to something.
Its almond-shaped centrepiece is made of hand-worked and hand-polished jet from Whitby (northern England). It hangs from a long 18-carat gold chain, interspersed with a small rectangular plaque on which a name or word can be engraved.
Chain length 64 cm.
The word must be specified in the ‘Special ordering instructions’ section when completing the order.

DETAILS OF THE PIECE
Kairós is designed to accompany in vital processes of change and loss in a subtle, warm and ergonomic way, as its materials are noble and pleasant to the touch: Whitby jet is a fossilised wood from the Jurassic (more than 150 million years old), lightweight and deep black, and gold is the noble metal par excellence which, at 4.5 billion years old, is part of the formation of our planet.

MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT
Standing with my grandmother in front of her jewellery box at about 16 years old, I saw some black earrings and asked her about them. She told me that, after her father's death, she changed to mourning black clothes along with her earrings. That is when I discovered the existence of specific jewellery to accompany moments of mourning, the story of which captivated me.
Mourning jewellery is the child of the Romantic period, a time of profound transformation in affectivity. At this time, feelings were externalised in all artistic practices and jewellery experienced a boom in its symbolic power, with the ability to accompany key moments in life: births, marriages, and death.
After an in-depth field research on mourning jewellery and jet that took me to the town of Whitby, in the north of England (whose cliffs produce some of the best jet in the world), I created ‘Forget Me Not’, a sculptural object presented at the ARCO Contemporary Art Fair in 2023, which highlighted the lack of space that contemporary Western society gives to people in mourning, opening a dialogue to explore the scarcity of symbols and exit protocols or rituals, both in the loss of loved ones and in other experiences of transit between life stages.
After this artistic endeavour, several people asked me if I would create a piece of jewellery today that would function as a mourning amulet, to accommodate the need they had to accompany themselves in such moments.
