Cecilia Azcárate is an artistic director for Spotify in New York. She is a trailblazer with extraordinary sensitivity. For few a few years now she has been combining a pearl necklace that belonged to her mother with Nike’s techno clothing and polarized biker’s sunglasses. Two days before we met in New York, her mother’s necklace broke. “It’s a sign” she said, when she saw the jewel inspired by her. Seven small gold nuggets suspended in a fine gold chain (almost like a prehistoric amulet, a tooth necklace). The necklace “Cecilia”, over her techno black T-shirt soaked by the rain, reflected on the polarized sunglasses became unmistakable, more expressive and contemporary. The symbiosis between woman and jewel is a continuum. Every day Cecilia crosses the Brooklyn Bridge on her bike—whether sun, rain or snow. We photographed her on a rainy day at a coffee house in Little Italy where she has breakfast every day. We talked about the symbolic value of a jewel and its power as protective object.
